It’s the time of year when out on a walk through the neighborhood, you begin to smell people cooking on a grill. The flavor and aroma of grilled foods is so appealing that you immediately want to run home and fire up your own. One easy and healthy option is a turkey burger.
Many people choose ground turkey over ground beef as the fat content can often be lower, however it’s important to understand that the fat content of ground meats, both beef and turkey, can vary greatly. Generally ground turkey breast would be close to 95% lean beef in fat content, both good choices.
One way to keep these leaner meats moist is to incorporate high-moisture ingredients like minced vegetables. We add a variety of vegetables to our Green Mountain Turkey Burger (Note: hidden veggies are a great way to increase your vegetable intake). Feel free to experiment with this recipe below by adding other vegetables such as sautéed mushrooms, grated zucchini, or any others you can think of. Enjoy!
Green Mountain Turkey Burger
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1/4 cup minced celery
- 1/4 cup minced onions
- 1/4 cup grated carrots
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon tabasco sauce, optional
- 1/4 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
- 1 tablespoon minced fresh basil
- 1 tablespoon minced fresh oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried mustard
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 egg, whisked
- Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and portion into 4 equal patties.
- On hot grill, cook until internal temperature is 165 degrees and serve immediately.
