Organic or Not Organic, That is the Question

I asked my husband, “what should I blog about today.”  He said “blog about GMO’s.”  This made me so proud, since when I met him I’m pretty sure he didn’t know anything about genetic modification, now it’s the first thing that pops into his head.  GMO’s are a big subject, but it got me thinking about how the organic standards address GMO’s.  Yesterday in class we reviewed what it meant for foods to be labeled as organic.

Here at Green Mountain at Fox Run, we’ve been focusing more on discussing organics since we’ve begun our new Food As Medicine Program.  Since it’s a confusing subject I thought I’d go over the basics and post some links to resources.  So to start, what does organic mean?

Organic Standards require that:

  • None of the following are used: irradiation, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms
  • Standards set by the National Organic Standards Board are followed regarding use of synthetic and natural substances, such as fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides
  • Antibiotics are not used in the production of organic meats & that organic livestock are fed 100% organic feed
