I’ve had major surgery on the right twice (to remove bone fragments) and have plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis in both. I suppose it was all that crazy dancing in the 80’s along with too many years of waitressing to put myself through college. It’s actually amazing how many things can go wrong in those floppy little appendages at the bottom!

Creating A Foot And Back Sensitive Exercise Routine
In fact, the foot surgery and a recent back surgery were part of the reason I scheduled my first visit (I say first because I have already scheduled my return visit!) to Green Mountain. I wanted to establish an exercise routine that would be back and foot sensitive with a professional. Enter LynnAnn – her expertise helped get me back on track.
Using The Bender Ball
She recommended an exercise aid called a Bender Ball that has also greatly increased my ability to exercise without re-injuring my back. I have struggled with the food piece at times but the exercise thing has been easy to maintain – I do cardio at the recommended 3 to 5 times a week and fit in weight training 2 to 3 times a week as well. But I digress; it’s the feet we’re talking about.
I’d like to tell you I was doing ballet or climbing off the roof or ice-skating or something else as equally exotic but, in truth, I was just walking. That’s what having bad feet means; you can injure yourself just by walking!

All right, I might have had heels on (against doctor’s orders) but it was Christmas day and I wanted to wear them. Boy, did I get a Christmas present! When I took the shoes off, it felt like someone was stabbing me in the heel with an ice pick.
Exercise Is A Challenge After An Injury
Having been here before, I knew just what to do. RICE – rest, ice, compression and elevation for several days. No worries, it was Christmas, remember, and being off my feet for a few days seemed like a reward for all the pre-holiday frenzy. But when I wrote this, it had been 5 days and the recovery was slow.
I spoke to my physician and she said no exercise until I am completely pain free and that could take weeks. What to do about exercise?

I’ve become used to doing it and I feel better when I do it. This laying around is getting old and I’m starting to feel achy and miserable all over.
But what to do?
Doc said not to use my feet and suggested swimming which I absolutely hate so I can’t see me joining a pool and driving there to do something I hate.
Okay, LynnAnn, I hear you, “Something is better than nothing”.
So, I can continue to lift some weights in the basement and I’ll put off the cardio until my heel is healed. In the meantime, I will try to continue a mindful healthy eating practice so that I combat this feeling of sluggishness and fight the urge to get on the scale.
I will “let it be” and step up the exercise when I am able.
Now, if only I could have such a grounded attitude about those damn high heels!
