“Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.” ~ Veronica A. Shoffstall
A very happy Valentine’s Day weekend to our readers. Be your own Valentine this year; change negative body image and realize your own beauty. As Aimee Mullins said, “Confidence is the sexiest thing a woman can have.”
In a study in Southern Australia, two-thirds of 6-7 year old girls “believed that being thin would make them more popular.” Additionally, a study from the University of Haifa that was released this week claims that an adolescent girl’s chances of developing negative body image and eating disorders are increased the more time she spends on Facebook. Good news, however: the more empowered a girl felt, the more positive her view of her body. There are definitely some empowering sites on Facebook; check out VenusVision, Beautiful You, Adios Barbie, and Sacred Self…and don’t forget about Green Mountain at Fox Run’s Facebook page, too!
In London next month, advertisements will be popping up featuring a smiling infant with the caption, “Is this the happiest she’ll ever be about her appearance?” This poster is for Endangered Species in the UK, a summit created to break down the culture which causes women and girls to hate their bodies and instead celebrate all of our beautiful shapes and sizes. Similar summits will occur in New York, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Melbourne in March. Gladly, other organizations are creating events and campaigns to promote positive body image in all corners of the world, such as Melbourne, Australia, Saint Mary’s College in Indiana, Ohio Wesleyan, Arizona State University, Kingston, Ontario, and Texas Tech.
What will you give yourself this Valentine’s Day?
