It Happened This Week: America the Beautiful, Boycotting Ralph Lauren, Clean Water & Go Fish

Venus Vision reviewed America the Beautiful, a documentary that asks “Who benefits from women not feeling beautiful?”  I haven’t seen it yet, but after I finish this post, I’m going to go enter the contest to win the DVD.  You can, too, if you enter by today (December 11).

Darryl Roberts, director of America The Beautiful, is also spearheading a boycott of Ralph Lauren products, protesting that company’s ad campaigns that feature photoshopped pictures of models that make them look emaciated.   You can learn more about the boycott here and add your support by becoming a fan.
Looks like America’s not so beautiful in some other ways, too.  Check out this New York Times article that shows many of our public water supplies aren’t as pristine as we’d hope.  I’m lucky to live in Vermont and have my own well (that we have to periodically test for safety).  But I always encourage charcoal water filters for anyone who doesn’t control their own water supply.  They’re inexpensive and well worth the money.

Speaking of water, you may have been trying to eat more fatty fish because of its health benefits.  This video from the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health explains one of those health benefits:  A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed eating fish can help lower risk of dementia.  What are your favorite fish?  I love sardines.  Recently heard them described as an “antidepressant in a can” due to the positive effect of omega 3 fatty acids.

Fish is a great source of protein, some of which is the amino acid methionine.  A recent study suggests  methionine may be important to long lives.  Previously, many thought it was a consistent low calorie intake that provided that benefit best.  But it does have to be a balanced intake.  It gets complicated but if you’re interested, read more here in Science Daily.  My take?  It’s about eating balanced, and was glad to see that win out over very low calories.  I like to eat too much to get behind that. 🙂

Do you like sardines?

  1. For the longest time I did not like sardines, but I remember my father used to take cans of them to work for lunch. I finally acquired a taste for them recently and really like them. Another good source of omega-3 fatty acids is salmon. I love it poached with dill sauce!
