Healthy and Nutritious Pomegranates – A Winter Jewel


When I was in Junior High (a loooong time ago), we had a foreign exchange student from Iran (who we all had crushes on btw), who among his other exotic qualities introduced us to a wonderful fruit which he ate almost every day at lunch.  Inadvertently he started the coolest brown bag lunch fad that year – eating exotic pomegranates.

For the rest of the year we all walked around with stained fingers from the fruit’s intense red juice and ooh, weren’t we cool!?  Well, what’s cool goes around and comes around and pomegranates are no longer just a decorative item for a Christmas center piece or holiday wreath – they’re back and better than ever.

Pomegranates are not only delicious, but wonderfully nutritious.  High in potassium they are filled with antioxidants and vitamin C.  So, how do you pick a good pomegranate?  Pick one up and feel its weight. The seeds actually count for about 1/2 of the weight of the whole fruit.

A pomegranate should resemble the size of a large apple and have some weight to it. The skin should be shiny, taut and thin. Never pick one with cracks or splits. Once you have brought your pomegranates home to enjoy, the big question is how you get into them?

Step 1 – Cut off the crown and cut it into sections (like an orange or grapefruit)

Step 2 – Place the sections in a small bowel of water and push out the arils (juice sacs) into the water and discard everything else.

Step 3 – Then strain out the water and eat the juicy arils – seeds and all!

So, whether you enjoy an ‘after five’ pomegranate martini, some grenadine and soda, sprinkle them over your cereal in the morning, add them to bread or just tear into one and eat it with your fingers, get to your store and try this exotic and delicious fruit – it’s a good thing!
