I was having a conversation this weekend with a friend of mine who lives in Los Angeles. He’s been lamenting for years about his lack of initiative when it comes to exercise. He’s not exactly the best healthy eater either, but on this day we were discussing his apathy toward fitness. His excuses? All the usual suspects. No time, no energy, a distaste for about every form of exercise known to man and everything else we’ve all heard or said 100 times before. Suddenly he had his epiphany. It was the beginning that was giving him problems. He simply couldn’t get started.
I tried my best to convey to him that when it comes to starting an exercise plan, there’s really no right or wrong. There’s never a perfect time. The important thing is to begin. Procrastination is not uncommon. I believe most of us have a problem with the beginning of things. I shared with him one of my favorite quotes from a chick flick I was sure he hadn’t seen.
From Hope Floats:
“Beginnings are scary. Endings are usually sad, but it’s what’s in the middle that counts. So, when you find yourself at the beginning, just give hope a chance to float up. And it will.”
After all these years of going round and round with diet and exercise I know one thing for sure. While I’m mulling all this stuff over in my head, what should I do, eat, when, where, I’m not getting any younger, my heart isn’t beating any stronger and unfortunately my arms aren’t getting toned all by themselves. The truth is, no matter what our fitness level is today, we are where we are and that’s the best place to begin. Whether you’ve never exercised a day in your life, or you once completed the Boston Marathon, today is only another beginning.
So, dust off the old tennies, grab your favorite tunes and hit the park, pavement or playground…whatever turns you on, because the sooner you get past the beginning, the closer you’ll be to that all important middle, where hope will float up.
