The 9 Top Tips For a Fun, Balanced & Healthy Summer

I’ve always loved the song Summer Breeze by Seals and Croft. It conveys the light, airy feel of a carefree, happy summer moment. Breathe that thought in for a minute. Feels good, doesn’t it?

Keeping A Healthy Balance Can Be Challenging In Summer

But summers can sometimes be even more distracting and demanding than other times of the year.

  • When we spend more time at work trying to get everything done before vacation, or playing catch-up when we return.
  • When our workload is the highest, as with a seasonal business.
  • When we have kids at home and want to keep them offline and outdoors, often shuttling them back and forth between activities.
  • When we just want to be outside, not working, yet that’s not a choice. The result: Distraction and even stress that whittles away at our ability to do much for ourselves.

All that and more can add up to a big challenge to keeping a healthy lifestyle in place. So how can we make the most of summer as a time to feel good and have fun?

Top Tips for a Fun and Feel-Good Summer

Try these top tips to help the balance find you. The key: Making it enjoyable.

Fun Feel-Good Fitness Tips for Healthy Balance

1 – Plan And Commit To Being Active Daily

Plan and commit to at least one activity daily for yourself and, if relevant, your kids or other family. Maybe a family bike ride, walk or rollerblade around the neighborhood.

Or just a trip to the park where everyone can do their thing, be it swinging on the swing set, playing Frisbee or pushing a toddler on the merry-go-round. Having fun while moving your body is the objective.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be a long time and it shouldn’t feel painful – just get outside, and enjoy the experience of moving your body.

Kayaking2 – Water is Where It’s At

Take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather and head to the water! Be it the pool, a lake for canoeing or kayaking, or a river for fishing or tubing, water offers a different way to keep things interesting. And for the orthopedically-challenged among us, it’s a godsend.

3 – Try New Outdoor Activities

How about playing golf — sans cart. Or paddleboarding — what a way to work your core and build your balance.

4 – Explore By Bike

A leisurely bike ride along one of the many rail-to-trail networks, now being developed throughout the country, can add a little adventure.

5 – Set Aside Time For a Weekly Quiet Walk

Consider setting aside one day a week to take a walk alone, just to relax and fill yourself up in another way. What could be more fun than true relaxation?

6 – Visit Local Farmers Markets

Visit your local farmers market once a week and stock up on the delights of the season. Then build fresh, delicious but simple meals around what you buy.

7 – Try New Olive Oils And Vinegars

Invest in some delicious extra virgin olive oil and interesting vinegars, such as tarragon-flavored oil and grapefruit-flavored vinegar. New combinations can turn a “regular” salad or roasted veggies into an adventure.

8 – Cook With Others

Make meal prep a family or friend affair. Cook together, or have everyone take charge of a different meal. Get enough friends and family involved, and a week’s worth of delicious meals is definitely doable!

9 – Schedule A Weekly Special Food Night

Reserve one night a week as a special food night, to perhaps move beyond fresh simplicity to something that you especially look forward to.

For example, Friday or Saturday could be pizza night. Gather a variety of veggie toppings (peppers, onion, broccoli, mushrooms, fresh basil, arugula, sliced tomato and more) along with the regular sauce and cheese. Then, with pre-made pizza crusts, those you make yourself, or even tortillas as the base, let everyone make their own.

It can even mean getting veggies into those who subscribe to “veggie-hating.” And if you can’t stand the heat in the kitchen, grill ’em for extra flavor.

What are your ideas for making this summer one that invites fun, feeling good and balance this summer?
