This weekend called for some Spring cleaning at my house. One room I tackled was our home exercise room. I must admit it didn’t get much use this Winter since once I started exercising outdoors last year, I can no longer bring myself to use my treadmill. Previously I adored it, but once you get a taste of outdoor running, it’s hard to go back.
In addition to my treadmill needing some serious dusting, I also decided to fold up my husband’s Total Gym that was monopolizing the majority of the free space in the room. Frankly I cannot remember the last time I saw him use it and I personally would rather do what Mallory Peterson, our full time Fitness Specialist at Green Mountain, calls Power Moves for strength training. These Power Moves use all the major muscles in the upper and lower body. They are push-ups, pull-ups, squats, & lunges. What do I like the most about these? With the exception of an inexpensive pull-up bar, they do not require exercise equipment.
How many of us use our existing exercise equipment as a laundry rack? How often do you see exercise equipment for sale (or free) in the newspaper? How often do you stumble upon it in “swap shops” at your local transfer station? I’m guessing it’s one of the most common purchases that people make and never (or rarely) use. I did get some serious use out of my treadmill, but at this point in my life I’m starting to lean more towards activity that doesn’t require bells, whistles, or contraptions. A few free-weights, a pull-up bar, and a heart rate monitor seem to be doing the trick lately.
What exercise equipment have you purchased in the past that collected dust? What equipment do you still love?
