What? Ugh. In a nutshell, there was a recent study conducted which indicated that folks who quit smoking gain weight. And people who gain weight are more susceptible to type 2 diabetes. But these type of headlines just irk me to no end.

Yes, well, that’s because people do tend to gain weight after they’ve quit smoking, and being overfat can be a precursor to diabetes, but to suggest that smoking is better?
How about this from Reuters,
“Study Finds Quitting Smoking Raises Diabetes Risk”
“Smoking is well known as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, but scientists said on Monday that quitting the habit can raise the risk even more in the short term.”
Hmm, to smoke and get type 2 diabetes or to stop smoking and get diabetes…that is the question???
And finally my favorite from none other than WEBMD. A headline designed purely to lure you on to their landing page where they attempt to redeem themselves.
“Quitting Smoking Carries Diabetes”
“Smoking Cessation Temporarily Increases Diabetes Risk, but Researchers Say the Benefits of Quitting Outweigh the Risk.”
Guess that second part just wasn’t as sexy.
So what is there to learn from this? (Besides don’t believe everything you read). If you quit smoking and gain a few pounds you might get diabetes? No! Folks at the highest risk for getting type 2 diabetes are people with family members who have type 2 diabetes. Also those of us who might have metabolic syndrome (plus other health considerations like, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, low good HDL and high blood pressure) are more susceptible and, yes, as we all know, those who are obese or overweight.
But you CAN quit smoking without becoming obese and you CAN quit smoking without getting diabetes. Trying to shock people into submission simply never works.
