Since “bucket list” became a mainstream word a few years ago, seems like everyone has one.
For those of you not in the know – a bucket list is THE list of things we want to do before we die, a compilation of the daring, artistic, exotic things we say we will do someday. For me, it’s hiking Machu Picchu, going on safari, and owning a house with a swimming pool.
Bucket lists are great. They inspire and help us escape the mundane. But it’s not often we get to check those big ticket items off our lists. Last time I looked, I hadn’t set foot in Peru, outran an elephant or gone skinny dipping (who came up with this phrase anyways?) in my own backyard. Not to say my mind hasn’t visited these places in my daydreams, but the realities of life don’t make traditional bucket lists easy to complete.

Well, last week I saw someone’s summer bucket list – easy enough things to do that will still shake up a routine, make us appreciate what we have, and give us an opportunity to slow down and breathe in the world. That’s what a bucket list really is, after all, right? And I thought, “Yes! That’s what I need! A seasonal bucket list of the things that I say I am going to do every year, but just don’t get to them.”
These are the little inspirations we can find nearby and within our families, the stackable experiences that help create a tower of self-care. They don’t have to be grand aspirations, just little nuggets to renew faith, awaken the senses and find fun in our routines.
Without further ado, here is my Fall Bucket List 2013:
- Roadtripping to take pictures of the foliage
- Walking on a beautiful new road I discovered
- Having a true farm-to-table dining experience (DONE!)
- Tasting every single hot apple cider I can get my hands on
- Swimming one last time in Echo Lake before it’s too cold
- Finding a shooting star
