5 Reasons Binge & Emotional Eating Needs Specialized Care

5 Reasons Binge & Emotional Eating Needs Specialized CareHaving just attended the Binge Eating Disorder Association conference, I am even more passionate about the opening of Green Mountain at Fox Run’s Women’s Center for Binge and Emotional Eating.

Surprisingly, we are the ONLY center specializing in the treatment of women who struggle with binge and emotional eating in the country.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder: there are more people suffering from BED than anorexia and bulimia combined, and traditional treatment centers tend to combine all eating disorders into the same community.

But I believe there are five basic reasons why binge and emotional eating needs specialized care.

Why We Created A Binge & Emotional Eating Treatment Center for Women

1. Safe, Healing Environments Are Necessary.

If you have never lived in a larger body in our culture driven by the thin ideal, you may have never experienced weight stigma – the assumption that there is something wrong with a person who lives in a larger body.

Additionally, if you engage in secret binge eating AND live in a larger body, this is not something that you readily disclose. It’s not safe.

Creating a judgment-free environment, where there are others who “get you” not only encourages those suffering in silence to come forward, but it also disengages the stress response of those wanting a safe place to land.

2. Autonomy and Choice Around Food is Necessary.

In order to heal an unhealthful relationship with food, rules and control need to be lifted. Environments that encourage mindful eating and experimentation with food choices within some predictable and safe parameters promotes self-trust and self-care.

Due to the medical necessity of treatments for other eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, strict rules regarding food plans and meal time management limit the freedom needed in the treatment of binge eating disorder.

3. EveryBODY can and must have opportunities to move in order to heal.

Creating opportunities for physical activity that accommodate and create modifications for all sizes and mobility limitations get people moving and feeling better in their bodies again.

From a mental and physical health perspective, movement is the best healing salve there is. Green Mountain at Fox Run specializes in creating safety and joy in movement again – not all facilities have the campuses or specialized staff to accommodate this.

4. The Need For a WELL Versus SICK environment.

Those with medical and psychiatric stability do not necessarily need doctors and nurses around 24/7, but they do need to get away, retreat from their home environment in order to focus on healing, gain confidence and “reboot”.

A retreat allows for the getaway without the expense and restrictions of a residential treatment center, yet accommodates an outpatient level of clinical services within the daily schedule.

We also find it important that a person doesn’t need to have a diagnosis of BED to gain the benefit from treatment. We offer the same excellent treatment for those struggling with emotional eating before it becomes a larger issue.

5. A Focused and Specialized Clinical Team is Necessary.

Green Mountain’s Women’s Center for Binge and Emotional Eating offers a program focused on the key issues and skills necessary to begin healing in as little as two weeks.

Evidence-based mindful interventions and motivational theory that works with binge and emotional eating drives the programming. Keeping in mind a long lasting journey, we work to find a Pathway(SM) for healing that involves an aftercare plan once you leave the program.
