Fall Fitness: 8 Tips for Autumn Activities

Fall has arrived here at Green Mountain at Fox Run.  The mountains are turning their glorious shades of oranges and yellows.  The faint smell of wood smoke is in the cooler air, with bluer skies and silver-gray lined clouds.  You can feel the anticipation of the colder weather to come.

By taking advantage of the warm sunny afternoons, fall is also a perfect time to begin a fitness routine.

Here are ideas to help you enjoy this fall season.

8 Autumn Fitness Activities

1 Working In The Yard

Raking leaves or yard work may seem tedious, but did you know that it can actually count as a strengthening and cardiovascular activity? When was the last time you jumped into a pile of leaves?  Okay, maybe jumping into leaves might not your thing, but how about having a “leaf fight” with a rambunctious 8-year-old?  It’s a lot softer than a pillow fight.

2 Apple Picking

Apple picking or walking through a corn maze is another way to celebrate the season’s festivities while having some fun.  Reaching, squatting and carrying those bags of apples can be a great workout.  Be sure to wear good sneakers and hydrate as needed.

3 Take a hike!

Have fun listening to the leaves crunching under your feet. I always recommend hiking with a friend, but if solitude is your objective, let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to return.

4 Kayaking

Last weekend I had the pleasure of kayaking on Lake Rescue at Plymouth State Park.  With the colorful mountains surrounding the lake, the peepers chirping and the rhythmic motion of gentle waves, I was in a state of pure bliss while receiving upper body and core strengthening.

5 Golfing

Golfing is optimal this time of year.   Many people don’t think of golf as a physical activity, but if you walk the course instead of taking a cart, it counts as cardio, strength, and balance.  Not to mention the required mental focus.

6 Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is one of those activities that lets you get out into the fresh air, appreciate nature, and not to mention the activation and strengthening of the core muscles and inner thighs.

7 Biking

Biking is a wonderful way to experience the beautiful landscape that fall has to offer. This time of year is a popular time for both road riding and mountain biking in Vermont due to the moderate temperatures and beautiful scenery.

8 Begin Ski Conditioning

Lastly, now is the time to begin training for your winter activities.  Many times as a personal trainer I am approached in December by potential clients who want to train for the ski season.  Guess what?  You need a few weeks, or even months to begin ski conditioning – not just a few days.  So if skiing is your thing, start preparing your body now for the slopes.

Fall activities “fly” by with the leaves…so take advantage of this transitional season to enjoy the outdoors!
