11 Ideas to Help You Fly in 2013


New Year, here we come. Yet again we can spend precious time focusing on weight loss or we can explore other ways to  live more fully this year, and yes, even reduce stress. When expectations are unrealistic, or the clutter gets too great, or the to-do list gets too long, it is easy to move back into behaviors that don’t work for you but are familiar and, in that way, comfortable.

I discovered a website by Mara Cilley whose byline says, “Since 1999, she has been a mentor to over half a million women teaching them how to organize their homes and how to love themselves.”

FlyLady has 11 commandments that will help you begin to FLY:

  1. Keep your sink clean and shiny.
  2. Get dressed every morning, even if you don’t feel like it. Don’t forget your lace-up shoes.
  3. Do your morning and before-bedtime routine everyday.
  4. Don’t allow yourself to be sidetracked by the computer.
  5. Pick up after yourself. If you get it out, put it away.
  6. Don’t try to do two projects at once. ONE JOB AT A TIME.
  7. Don’t pull out more than you can put back in one hour.
  8. Do something for yourself everyday, maybe every morning and night.
  9. Work as fast as you can to get the job done. This will give you more time to play later.
  10. Smile even when you don’t feel like it. It is contagious. Make your mind up to be happy, and you will be.
  11. Don’t forget to laugh everyday. Pamper yourself; you deserve it!

My rebel gets triggered with these do’s and don’ts, but if I pick the things that speak to me and experiment with her other suggestions, I have a tool kit to make small behavioral changes each day. The hope is they will help me feel less overwhelmed and more in charge, instead of the tasks and stuff in my life controlling me, inducing stress, and perhaps leading to unwanted reactions to stress. Emotional eating, anyone?

  1. Flylady has a lot to offer including her most important hint. Baby Steps. But I, personally, found her entire system too much to deal with.

      Hi Stella, Thanks for writing and I totally get it about too much info with Flylady. I like the idea of idea steps, or celebrating small successes. It is so easy to focus on what is not working and baby steps helps to notice what is. Darla

    I found her system overwhelming too – then I found a way to get all of the daily emails in one email – and I set up the inbox to just show the most recent email. That way, my inbox isn’t cluttered with lots of reminders that I SHOULD be doing something! When I set aside time to actually follow the directions, I’m surprised at how little TIME it takes to clean each room.

    Right now, I need to focus on #4 – don’t get side tracked by the computer! 🙂

  3. I really like FlyLady’s control journal, both for adults and the one for children. I use them with my unorganized elementary students.

    I find her 11 commandments overwhelming, but I think it’s good to focus on a couple at a time.

    #5 & #11 are a good start for me!
