New England Journal of Medicine showed that people
who received intensive
counseling on diet, exercise, and behavior modification
as well as exercise supervision reduced risk of developing
diabetes by 58 percent. Study participants on diabetes
medication saw a 31 percent reduction -- nearly half that
of the first group.
