Being Okay with What Is

We’ve been practicing bits of mindfulness meditation in many of my classes the last few months. Also in a more extended form in the weekly Wednesday 4 pm class on Meditation.

I love being with women as they learn to meditate and move into mindfulness.

Within the space of as little as one to two minutes, the air in the room changes. I see the women’s faces change. I feel my own body, breathing, and ability to be with anything and everything become… easier… simpler… and more peaceful.

There is no magic here. Not even any special or interesting technique.

What “works” to create the shift in what those of us in the room are experiencing in these small moments, is the letting go… small surrenders. Allowing all of everything.

Letting ourselves just be exactly where we are. Without our tendency to try to “fix it”- that’s the big one.

What The Experts Say About Mindfulness Meditation

“There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live.”

“Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.”

Just Notice and Keep Breathing

When we practice mindfulness meditation, we allow ourselves to simply be with whatever is in that moment. Whatever sensations are in the physical body. Any and all emotions that are present. The various thoughts that may be running around in our noisy minds.

We make room for them all, without trying to change any of them. We just notice and keep breathing.

I may ask the women to notice where their attention is getting “snagged” or even “hijacked” while they are practicing this form of meditation. Is there a particular sensation or thought that is taking up more space than any other? Or a thought or feeling that is beginning to spin itself into a story or tap a longstanding belief-system?

And if there is – guess what? You don’t have to do anything about it. It’s still just about the breathing, and the noticing and allowing.

And what I hear during class from so many of the women, is how surprisingly relaxing and peaceful it gets… even while all of these feelings, thoughts and sensations are all still there… when you have permission to just let them be what they are.

When you give yourself permission to not have to fix anything. To let yourself be exactly where you are; to be present and mindful and just keep noticing.

More peace, more acceptance, more feel-good. While doing less. Good for your mind, good for your body, the benefits of most forms of meditation are long and impressive.
