Homemade Peanut Butter

peanut butter heartWith all the modern conveniences available today, it may seem ironic that there is a resurgence of creating homemade products lately. More and more people are looking for ways to DIY; I am one of them. I get a kick out of growing my own food, sewing my own clothes, grinding my own flour, and making my own cleaning products. Next on my “do it myself” list is making my own bar soap and making my own nut butters, especially peanut butter. We use a lot of peanut butter at my house and I think I’d have a greater appreciation for it if I had made it myself.

Here at Green Mountain at Fox Run, our chef, David Smith has been making homemade almond butter and sunflower seed butter for quite some time. He does so in a commercial food processor. Here are the basic steps:

  • toast nuts, if desired, in a 400 degree oven for about ten minutes
  • transfer nuts to food processor and process until crumbed into a fine meal
  • while processor is running, SLOWLY add a neutral tasting oil (peanut, canola, etc…) until paste forms
  • continue to process until smooth and creamy
  • store in glass jar in fridge

My personal food processor might not heavy-duty enough to handle this, but I’m thinking my upper body strength is. To really bring it back to basics I think I will try a manual grinder to make homemade peanut butter. Vintage meat grinders have nut butter attachments. Ironically, despite not being a meat-eater, I believe I have a vintage meat grinder at home, so I’ll give this a go. I’m excited.

    You have a Vitamix. Skip the grinder and follow the directions for blending nut butters in your manual. Or the Vitamix website has a step-by-step video showing how.:)Much faster and just as tasty.

    This is true. I think I will try both. There is something about grinding by hand that I get a kick out of… perhaps it’s when my husband makes references to pioneers when he sees me grinding flour or coffee. It’s as DIY as I can get!

    I’m lucky enough to live near a Whole Foods. They have the roasted nuts (almonds and peanuts) all nicely set up in a machine, and all I have to do is press a button and get freshly ground nut butter. Their almond butter made this way is awesome!! And no additives at all.

    That sounds pretty sweet. I’ve never even seen a Whole Foods….hence the need to figure it out myself. :)

    I make my own laundry soap, tooth paste cleaning products, crackers, cookies, granola, granola barres. I pretty much make everything I can from scratch lol I love knowing what’s going into my family. I’ve also made bath fizz as Christmas presents!

    Nice, Rachelle. I just started making my own laundry soap, dish soap, and other cleaning products too. It’s easy and fun. I’ve tried to make crackers but they didn’t turn out well. What kind of crackers do you make?
