Back Fat Be Gone!

Did you know that eating pumpkin can get rid of back fat and eating quinoa can minimize your rear end?  Neither did I until I watched the Dr. Oz show last week.

Did you know that drinking green smoothies everyday will help “melt fat away?”  Neither did I until I saw it on Pinterest.

I’m trying to think of a PC term to describe these “health tips”….I think I’ll go with hogwash.

As someone who eats pumpkin, quinoa, and green smoothies ALL THE TIME,  I can promise you that they don’t just miraculously melt fat away. While they are all amazingly healthy and delicious foods, it’s absurd to think that we could melt fat, or even crazier, spot-reduce by eating a specific food. Just like the fact that I can’t do 10,000 sit-ups until my belly fat disappears, one food is not going to change my body shape/size either.

Frankly I find it insulting that mainstream media thinks we are buying this nonsense. However, I can see the appeal of a potential quick-fix, real or fabricated. People are hopeful when they stumble on some new eating or exercise tip, hoping….“maybe this will be the answer I’ve been searching for.”  One failed diet attempt after another can create a level of despair that may cloud our judgment and make us frantically head out to buy acai juice or raspberry ketone supplements.

In the end, we know the truth, that moving toward health, wellness, and yes, even a smaller butt is a complex process. It involves looking at the person as a whole and addressing:

  • behaviors & habits
  • thinking errors
  • activity levels
  • eating patterns
  • influence of friends, family, media
  • hormones
  • sleep
  • stress response
  • and on, and on, and on

    I just read an article that said, “Put down the magazine that is promising magic and just start moving. You will surprise yourself what you can accomplish with a little bit of time (more than two weeks or 10,000 sit-ups of course) and a whole lot of fun.”

    It really disappoints me that some of the people selling these stories are doctors or at least have advanced degrees but no honour!

    I really hate it when the media advertises these ridiculous health and weight loss supplements/plans. Half the time they’re not even safe! And as a health professional I’m utterly disappointed with Dr. Oz and how he’s sold out. You’re supposed to be able to trust a doctor… and there he is telling you to eat pumpkin or raspberry ketones and melt fat. Yea right!

    Glad to see there are others out there who are on the same page. I agree that it’s even more disappointing when it’s people with credentials that are giving this crazy advice.
