Fitness Friday: An Uphill Battle, Literally

Earlier this week, Robyn blogged about how when we fall into the trap of inactivity, it can feel difficult to get out of it. Lately, one of Newton’s Laws of Motion is ringing true in my life:

“Every object persists in its state of rest or uniform motion­ in a straight line unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed on it.”

I’ve been an object at rest. Maybe it’s the winter doldrums. Maybe it’s my stiff lower back. Or maybe it’s just feeling a little bored with my routine. I am still keeping my commitment to finish my Jillian Michaels’ DVD, but haven’t been engaging in other cardio options.

Well, last weekend my friend and fitspiration Linda, who I have blogged about before, convinced me to do something called the Winter Wild with her. It’s an uphill race, where you literally climb a ski run. People ski, snowshoe, run and walk their way up and down a mountain.

Frankly, it was as hard as it sounds. Ski runs never look steep until you are going UP one, do they? But, the great thing is, it sparked in me a renewed interest in moving.

Being outside, silent snow falling, the sun coming up over the mountain – it all felt so peaceful and lovely. I am planning my second Winter Wild event for the second weekend in March, but more importantly, I am remembering that I like to move, my body wants to move. Sometimes we just have to look for different ways to do it. And what can look like an uphill battle – literally – can also open us up to new possibilities.

    What a fun way to exercise! My favorite type of physical activity is anything outside. I’m always down for a weekend hike or long walk!

    Maria, I know! We are supposed to get snow here on Sunday and I am definitely planning to snowshoe!

  • Hi Maria, Although I am a big fan of hiking up mountains (with or without snow on them), I believe it’s also about variety and social support. I have all the DVDs as well, and I love them, but sometimes you simply need a change and good friends to train with.

    Dr. Perlus, I couldn’t agree more. There is no way I would have gotten up at 5 a.m. in the middle of winter to climb a mountain without my friend Linda encouraging me! I always like the advice I once received about finding a more active way to socialize with friends. Instead of meeting for coffee or dinner, how about a walk? Instead of shopping, how about swimming?

    I’ve always known what I need to do but taking action has always been the hard part. What you said about ‘Ski runs never look steep until you are going UP one’ is so true, you think things are easy until you actually start doing them and realise you dont always get the same results as you expected.
