We talk a lot in this blog about a fitness soul search – finding an exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise to you. Moving because it feels good. It’s not necessarily an easy journey, but an important one if you want to make fitness a constant in your life. I can finally say that I found my fitness soul mate this summer.

I’ve always liked to swim. When I was younger I was on a swim team. And, I’ve always felt confident in the water. And though I liked how swimming made me feel, swimming laps in a pool just felt so redundant to me, thus making it feel like a chore most of the time.

On a whim, a few friends and I decided to try swimming across Echo Lake this summer. It’s a lake that’s a few miles from Green Mountain where we go “Vermonting.” It’s about a mile long. So, we found ourselves someone to kayak alongside of us and set out on our journey.

The cool lake water, the afternoon stillness, the 360 degree views of the Green Mountains, and an actual destination made all the difference to me. I felt so good when I made it to the other side. It didn’t feel like all that much work at the time, but when I drove around the lake afterwards, I was surprised at how far I had swam.

Week after week, I begged my friends to go with me after work. Brene Brown recently said that swimming for her was therapy, exercise and meditation. That’s exactly what I experienced. And I wanted to keep doing it day after day.

Unfortunately, it’s too cold to swim the lake now. So, I’m on my winter fitness soul search at the moment. But, I can tell you that finally finding an exercise that worked with my body, mind and spirit was indeed a very special feeling.

Have you found your fitness soul mate?

    Cycling is my passion
The movement, the wind , the thrill of the next horizon, the effort to climb that damned hill and the rush of the impending downhill does it for me every time

Swimming is great workout for weight loss because you need to keep moving whole body against resistant of water. I recently join swimming class where as my parents had already trained in their childhood. This make me very embarrassing :(
Swimming is a good all-round activity because it keeps your heart rate up but takes some of the impact stress off your body, Builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness and Helps maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs.

Lisa you can’t imagine.. I am also begging to my friends to go for open lake swimming but they couldn’t :)

  • Lisa. You are right, we can reduce our weight by swimming.

  • [...] I tried a variety of new things. Some I liked, some I despised, some were just okay. Trying new modes of movement is kind of like dating. You meet some weird people, you meet some boring people, and sometimes…. You meet your soul mate! In my case, my fitness soul mate. [...]
