In discussing the typical obstacles to exercise, it’s common to hear people mention the weather. “It’s too hot” or “it’s too cold” or “it’s raining” or “it’s icy out.” Sometimes these could just be excuses, but often they are valid reasons to stay indoors. If your favorite mode of movement is an outdoor activity like walking, biking, running, hiking, etc… what can you do when the temp is in the 90′s or in the negatives?
I would be nice to find a workout routine that works for all types of weather, but unless it’s something you can consistently do in a temperature-controlled gym, it may be necessary to have a variety of activities you can turn to if you are the type that loves outdoor exercise. Since we are currently in the middle of the hot and humid season here in VT, here is a list of summer activities to consider:
- Walk in the Woods – walking in a shaded forest may be much more comfortable than in the beating sun on an open road.
- Jump in the Pool – consider a circuit in the pool, versus feeling like you need to swim laps. Alternating strength and cardio movements might be much more fun.
- Shake up Your Schedule – try pushing outdoor exercise to early morning hours or later in the evening when the sun is not directly overhead.
- Try Biking – if you are used to walking or running, unless you are super-hero-fast, there’s not much wind to cool you off. Biking while breezy, also offers the option of coasting down hills and taking a break, which you can’t do while walking or running.
- Consider the Gym Short Term – look for a short gym membership versus signing up for 6 months or a year. Having a month-long membership in the middle of the summer may provide you with a variety of activities within the comfort of air conditioning.
