Whether it’s menopause, moving, marriage, divorce, having a child, or getting a new medical diagnosis, any kind of change can be a bit of a shock.  I’m finding that I’m getting to the point in my life where things are changing for me physically and although I should expect change, it’s still surprising none-the-less.

Having to begin to hold things farther away in order to read them, insomnia-issues,  or having to go down the stairs gingerly because my knees are bothering me does make me nervous.  It’s difficult to deal with (and accept) change.  Many people I know say they still feel like a 20-something in their mind, but our 30/40-something bodies keep reminding us otherwise.

One of the ways I help prepare myself for changes is to educate myself.  I remember people asking me why I would read books about menopause in my early 20′s, but just knowing what to expect can be helpful when things to start to change for us as we get older.  I’m realizing that I need to learn about new activities that keep me moving without taxing my joints.  Running, plyometrix and high-impact dance are probably no longer my best bet, although they used to be some of my favorite cardio options.  Being prepared for changes can help us go with it versus fighting it the whole way attempting to stick with what used to work for us in the past.

What things have you needed to do differently lately to adapt to changes?

    Hi there

    Instead of making gradual changes as my body aged, I continued what I now realize was brute force exercise to maintain my weight loss. And wham – life happened, including achy joints and back pain. And I stopped moving and kept eating. I’ve gained almost 40 lbs and I’ve decided to gently start moving again – yoga for meditation, flexibility and strength, walking for cardiovascular and mental health. And I’m looking at the food intake – what can change? It’s doable – I know it is. And out of respect for my aging body, I’m going to do it.
