As a lover of coffee I have a habit of drinking mine first thing every morning. Oftentimes, I am zipping out to my car, not mindfully, mind you. The adrenaline rushes through me as the day floods in and my to do list shouts in my head.
Meditation is a mindfulness tool we use a Green Mountain at Fox to decrease fat feelings and frustration about weight loss. In reading The Wise Heart the other evening, I became inspired by Jack Kornfield’s lovingkindness meditation which is below:
This meditation uses words, images, and feelings to evoke a lovingkindness and friendliness toward oneself and others. With each recitation of the phrases, we are expressing an intention, planting the seeds of loving wishes over and over in our heart.
May I be filled with lovingkindness.
May I be safe from inner and outer dangers.
May I be well in body and mind.
May I be at ease and happy.
Ah Ha! Lovingkindness and coffee together. Here is a strategy to practice meditation regularly.
I believe that it is easier to add a behavior to something you are already doing. So I am habituated to morning coffee drinking. By using my cup of coffee to remind me of the lovingkindness meditation I am prompted into a new behavior I could easily forget to do.
I can also drink the coffee mindfully; smelling, tasting, and savoring the warmth of the cup. This morning habit that I already have established can turn into a healthy ritual with ease.
How can you add a lovingkindness meditation to your day….coffee or not?
