Kitchen Gadgets You Can’t Live Without

As a dietitian I’m always brainstorming on ways to make healthy eating easier. One idea that I got from a fellow staff member at our fitness and health retreat, was to make green drinks. For months I made fun of her for drinking blenderized greens because it sounded awful to me, but after resurrecting some of the fruit and vegetable combinations from my “juicing-days” I’ll happily admit that she was right and I was wrong. Green drinks are delicious, as long as you put the right stuff in there. It’s such an easy way to surpass the recommended 3 servings of green leafy vegetables per week. Our chef Lisa Fennimore calls my drinks a “liquid salad snack,” which makes me smile.

Lately my favorite combination is: kale or beet greens, a peeled lemon, a chunk of peeled ginger, a kiwi, and a green apple or green grapes. Put it all in the blender with a touch of water and pulverize it. The only thing that could be improved in my mind is the texture since a regular household blender does not get this “smoothie” as smooth as I would like it. Which, after a long-winded intro, brings me to my topic of kitchen gadgets and appliances. At the moment, I’m lusting over a Vitamix blender. Given the fact that the model I want costs almost as much as my first car did, I’m still on the fence.

If I do buy myself this (we’ll call it a Christmas present), I’m hoping it will be one of those appliances I’ll love forever and think “how did I live without this?” I thought it would be fun to hear from all you blog readers about the kitchen appliance or gadget that you adore. Currently I have 2 favorites: my old-school hand-operated grain mill and a ½ cup ice cream scoop. I love being able to take grains like brown rice, amaranth, millet, and quinoa and turn them into flours that would otherwise be difficult to find where I live. The ice cream scoop (truly a #8 disher) is a favorite of mine since I do so much batch cooking; I’m constantly using it to scoop out ½ cup portions of food to be frozen in single servings. It works great!

What are your favorite kitchen tools or appliances?
