Today starts a series we'll continue until we introduce all of our staff who are the Green Mountain healthy weight loss program, most of whom contribute to this blog. I don't like to brag, but in this case, I just have to. Our staff is, well, just look at what some of the women who've come to Green Mountain have had to say. Enough from me. I introduce to you…Darla Breckenridge, The Strategy Lady!
I am one happy camper being on the Green Mountain behavioral team with Teri Hirss. Teri and I complement each other in our areas of expertise. I am a cognitive-behaviorist by training with a strong background in helping people change behavior. As a psychologist-masters, I have worked for many years in a private practice with women, families and children. Amazingly, I was a consultant teaching stress management at Green Mountain more than 20 years ago. It is a pleasure circled back around for a second time and to be fully immersed in the impressively balanced program of Green Mountain.
Highlights What are some highlights of what women get from your classes at Green Mountain? What is a personal highlight?
I have come to be called the “Strategy Lady” because in class and in working with women individually my pragmatic self emerges. Using whimsy, stories and inviting shifting into the world of possibilities, I can help women take their Green Mountain tools home and create strategies for success.
Personal highlight… Becoming a part of the blogging universe has been an exciting learning endeavor for me. I like the opportunity for interaction and writing about concepts that I hope can be of use to folks at home.
Managing What are some of your favorite stress management strategies?
The Affirmation room. Breathing, which we always have with us and behavioral prompting to do the breathing. I know that the more I add deep breathing to my life, the more mindful I am with food, personal upset and life.
More Managing How do you make time for yourself?
I use my calendar and schedule time for my exercise or hanging out with friends. I have a wildly fanciful imagination and I imagine any of those appointments with myself are appointments with my favorite actor. I would Never cancel with him.
Fun What do you do for fun?
Laugh! This may sound silly but fun is all around me if I can just let my funny bone get tickled. I know there are certain people in my life that laughter happens more frequently with and I seek them out. I love to contra dance, sing and dream up adventures, even if I can’t pull them off. See what I mean about my imagination?
Challenge of the day What is your biggest challenge right now?
Keeping track of it ALL. I leave home for three days a week to come to Green Mountain and I frequently don’t have all the bits and pieces in the right place. I so appreciate my computer for helping me track the myriad of tasks. As I create a more predictable rhythm I believe I will breathe easier in this area.
More Fun What’s your favorite fairy tale or joke?
The little engine that could. I think I deeply internalized…I think I can…I think I can…
Living life What is your personal philosophy of life? i.e., Sometimes you win some and sometimes you lose or you take it one day at a time…
I am a glass full kind of gal. I realize that this attitude has served me well throughout my life. I count my blessings, appreciate some changes in myself or others, feel so much gratitude for the opportunity to work with the women at Green Mountain who each day take giant steps toward self empowerment.
Clearing up the mysteries What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
People might not know that I was a Wonder Bread Bun packer in a factory at one time in my life. The upside of the job was that once I learned how to do it, I could zone out, let my brain go on vacation.
So there's Darla! Do you have any questions for her?
