Thoughts for a Friday: Staying Free of Fat Talk

By Marsha Hudnall on October 22, 2010

It's the end of Fat Talk Free Week for this year, but we hope everyone has committed to trying to keep their talk and their lives free of fat talk every week, every day.  It's a tough call in today's world where the diet mentality reigns.  Even people who have never struggled with weight use diet rules and judgments to assess what and how they eat, although they likely never follow the rules.  They just use them to, well, judge what they and others eat and look like.

That may sound harsh.  It's not meant to be. Society's judgments about food and body size are an outcome of a focus on body size as a measure of worth and the belief that diets are the way to change our bodies and make us more worthwhile.  In a sense, it's a matter of ignorance.  Not that that excuses it.  It's just what it is.

This week I've been tweeting various quotes we had compiled earlier in this decade to use on our blog and elsewhere.  They were so good, I didn't want to let them just sit idle on my computer.  Here are a few I thought relevant to my topic today.

Don't make assumptions.  ~Don Miguel Ruiz

Who feels it, knows it.  ~Peter Tosh

Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future.  ~Deepak Chopra

It is not too late to seek a newer world…. ~Tennyson

Every problem  has a gift for you in its hands.  ~Richard Bach

Freedom lives in being bold.  ~Robert Frost

This above all: to thine own self be true.  ~Shakespeare
