Imagine suffering with a deadly illness and not having the money to get the care you need. It happens all the time. Such a travesty in today's world.
It happens a lot when people are suffering with eating disorders. Not only is treatment very costly, insurance coverage for it is spotty. To top it off, there's also a dire need for research into effective treatment.
Sofia is a young woman who, well, I'll let her tell her story.
"….I have struggled with disordered eating in its various forms from a very young age. Four years or so ago it took a turn for the severe, and I have been fighting, literally, to stay alive. I have been in and out of hospitals and treatment centers for the last four and a half years.
This is where the difficulty comes in: I am in a place where I am willing and wanting to get well, but due to the long term nature and severity of my illness, I need a lot of help to do so. Eating disorder treatment, especially in the form recommended for someone with a disorder as severe as my own, is incredibly expensive…."
She goes on to tell a story that's familiar to many in this time of economic uncertainty. You can read more about it here. If you are so moved, you can contribute there to helping her get the treatment she needs, too. As she tells in her story, she's fighting for her insurance to pay for her treatment, and if she wins her case, she'll reimburse all donations. Although I read elsewhere that she would donate funds she received through this fundraising effort to help others who are in similar situations.
A shout-out to Miss Mary Max, who put together this blogging effort to help Sofia and who reached out to us to help. You can help with your blog, too. Here's how. And don't forget to contribute to Sofia's fund if it's within your ability to do so.
