This week we have a guest writer, Lori McGrail, Green Mountain’s current dietetic intern.  Lori put together this post below on the joys of hitting up the farmers’ market.

I spent my Memorial Day weekend hanging out with family and friends at Saratoga Lake in upstate New York. After a challenging 10 months in my dietetic internship, I was ready for a relaxing few days off with no work, no laptop, and no worries. On Saturday morning while flipping through the morning news channels, I caught the words “farmers’ market” and my ears perked up. We were having a barbeque later that day and I thought it would be wonderful to pick up some freshly grown New York fruits and vegetables. What better way to practice mindful eating than by paying attention to the qualities of delicious, locally-grown produce, straight from the farm?

After a quick check of Google maps, my sister and I were off to the farmer’s market being held at a local senior citizens center. It is early in the growing season but we still were able to purchase some red and green lettuce, asparagus, strawberries, cantaloupe, grape tomatoes, and radishes.

My sister’s big question was how do you cook asparagus? Easy…just grill it with a little olive oil, salt, pepper and any other favorite seasonings. (Thanks to Jon for his great class: Short Cuts to Flavor Country!). Chef Lisa also provided lots of great information on grilling vegetables in her blog article, “Healthy Cooking Thursday: My Favorite Veggies to Grill.”

You may be wondering how you can find farmers’ markets in your area. Check out www.localharvest.org, local magazines, newspapers, and news channel “what to do” reports. If you are interested in having fresh grown produce delivered all growing season long – look for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm in your area.  For a set fee, each week you receive a box of produce directly from the farmer.
