It Happened This Week: Spicy Weekends with Yoga

Nope, this post isn’t about new and exciting things to do with yoga poses.  The title’s just a clear ploy to get you to read more.  But it does have some interesting bits of news that tie those words together to give us some good info for protecting our health.

It all has to do with inflammation.

It’s becoming increasingly evident that excess inflammation underlies a lot of the chronic disease that’s afflicting people today — everything from heart disease to type 2 diabetes and, according to some experts, even weight struggles.  What causes excess inflammation?  What we eat to how we live, particularly if we live stressful lives.  We’ve always known yoga is good for reducing stress, and now it looks like yoga is also good for reducing inflammation.  Makes sense.

Looks like weekends might be good for putting out the fire of inflammation, too.  A study in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, as reported in Science Daily, showed “people experience better moods, greater vitality, and fewer aches and pains from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.”  They dubbed it the “weekend effect.” Click through the link to find out why we may feel so much better on the weekend.

Weekends are also a great time to spend a few hours in the kitchen preparing meals ahead of time so we can eat well in the middle of a busy week.  Consider spicing up some of those meals with tumeric, a favorite spice in Indian food, one of my personal favorites.  Studies show curcumin, a component of tumeric, is an anti-inflammatory.  News just out this week says it may reduce the risk of breast cancer.  Piperine, a component of black pepper, may have similar effects.

It didn’t happen this week, but we wanted to give you a heads up for next week — Healthy Weight Week. Tuesday is Rid the World of Fad Diets & Gimmicks Day featuring the Slim Chance Awards.  This year’s winners:

  • Worst Product, Hydroxycut
  • Worst Claim, the QVC shopping channel
  • Worst Gimmick, Kinoki Foot Pads.
  • The Most Outrageous – and dangerous – is an entire class of 69 tainted weight loss products that FDA said are spiked with powerful hidden drugs not listed on the label.

Thursday is Women’s Healthy Weight Day.  Let’s all celebrate by doing one extra special thing for ourselves that day!

What extra special thing might you do for yourself next Thursday? I’ll have to think about that.  Maybe you’ve got some good ideas.

Hope the weekend effect works for all of you over the next couple days.  Have a good one!
