Healthy Recipe: Cherry Vanilla Smoothie


Ellie Krieger was singing my song as she set the blender to whirring.  Well, she wasn’t actually singing, but she was making one of my favorite foods — a smoothie.  This one was featuring frozen tart cherries, with the added goodness of yogurt and milk.  I’m a sucker for both, not only because I love the combined taste of cherries and milk but also because both provide lots of good-for-me nutrition.

I talked about the health benefits of cherries a couple weeks ago in our Simply Sorbet recipe that stars tart cherry juice. Learned all this at a recent trip to the National Cherry Festival, sent there courtesy of the Cherry Marketing Institute.  And milk, well, we’ve all got milk’s health benefits pretty well down (that was an attempt at a couple of puns in case you were wondering).

So enough about what it does for us!  Here’s a yummy, easy and healthy recipe that makes me think cherry ice cream, only lighter.  If anything qualifies as a delicious healthy eating for healthy weight loss treat, this is it!

Cherry Vanilla Smoothie

Makes 2 servings

2 cups pitted, tart cherries (unsweetened) frozen

1 cup non-fat or low-fat vanilla yogurt

1 cup non-fat milk

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 tablespoon honey

1 cup ice

Put all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until smooth.  Then enjoy!!

    Ah, vanilla! I must add vanilla essence to my shopping list! That looks very good Marsha! Smoothies have also become my favorite food.

    Looks so yummy and healthy! I don’t drink too much milk, so I will use soy milk instead.

    Ah, yes, vanilla. Has always been one of my favorite flavors. And, Huan? I meant to post something about using something else for non-milk folks. If you make it w/ soy, let us know how it turns out! I’m thinking almond milk might be good, too. Or even rice milk. Although not sure what to use instead of the yogurt. There is soy yogurt but is there any other kind that’s not made from milk?
