September is PCOS Awareness Month

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects as many as 5 to 10% of women of childbearing age.  Yet I’d wager a large percentage of those women don’t realize they suffer the problem.  At Green Mountain, we frequently see women struggling with this problem who don’t even know they have it.  It’s no mystery why we see this at Green Mountain: unexplained weight gain is often a symptom.

Common symptoms of pco also include:

  • infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and/or irregular bleeding
  • infertility or inability to get pregnant because of not ovulating
  • increased growth of hair on the face, chest, stomach, back, thumbs, or toes
  • acne, oily skin, or dandruff
  • pelvic pain
  • obesity, usually carrying extra weight around the waist
  • type 2 diabetes
  • high cholesterol
  • high blood pressure
  • male-pattern baldness or thinning hair
  • patches of thickened and dark brown or black skin on the neck, arms, breasts, or thighs
  • skin tags, or tiny excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area
  • sleep apnea―excessive snoring and breathing stops at times while asleep

If you think you have polycystic ovarian syndrome, talk with your physician.  But you may find that he or she is as uneducated about the problem as the general public.  If so, the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association can be a great place to start getting some education about the subject.
